Lose 30 pounds in 30 Days – Is It Possible?

You’ve seen the T.V. spots. You’ve read the ads online and in magazines. “Lose 30 pounds in 30 days!” or “Lose 10 pounds in 1 week!” the headlines read. Is this realistic? Can you really lose 30 pounds in 30 days? What miracle weight loss product or technique can provide weight loss at such a high rate of speed?

In order to lose 30 pounds in 30 days, one would need to lose an average of a pound per day or 7 pounds per week. Some products, diets and weight loss systems claim to enable that kind of weight loss. Usually there is a unique ingredient, product or technique that claims to take the weight off like no other product or technique can. And there is inevitably a hefty price tag associated with the product or service. The truth is there is one and only one proven way to lose fat. The FDA’s report “Calories Count: Report of the Working Group on Obesity”states:

Fundamentally, obesity represents an imbalance between energy intake (e.g., calorie intake) and energy output (expended both as physical activity and metabolic activity; see text box on Calorie (Energy) Balance at Appendix B). Although there is much discussion about (1) the appropriate makeup of the diet in terms of relative proportions of macronutrients (fats [lipids], carbohydrates, and protein) that provide calories and (2) the foods that provide these macronutrients, for maintenance of a healthy body weight it is the consumption and expenditure of calories that is most important. In other words, “calories count.” (Emphasis mine)

Let’s examine the 30 day claim a little closer. One pound of fat is equal to about 3500 calories. Said another way, to lose one pound of fat, we must create a caloric deficit of about 3500 calories less than we burn. As an example, a 40 year-old male that weighs 250 pounds, is 5’10” tall and exercises 3 to 5 times a week burns about 3300 calories per day. If we follow the logic through to completion, it’s easy to see that the average male described above could not lose weight at such a high rate. He would have to eat nothing at all for the 30 day period. Even if someone can lose weight at a very high rate (more than 1 to 2 pounds per week is a high rate of weight loss), there are drawbacks. The goal of weight loss should actually be fat loss. When we lose weight at an accelerated rate, we lose more than fat. We lose water weight (which is temporary) and may lose muscle. Losing muscle is ultimately detrimental to weight loss because each pound of muscle burns extra calories, without doing any extra exercise.

If weight loss of 30 pounds in 30 days is not a realistic goal, what is a good target rate of weight loss? Evidence shows that losing 1 to 2 pounds per week helps to guarantee that the weight stays off, permanently. To lose 1 to 2 pounds a week, we need to cut our calories by about 500 to 1000 calories a day. But there is something else we should pay attention to – our Basal Metabolic Rate. BMR is the measure of calories we burn in one day if we are inactive. We should not eat less in a day than the number of calories we would burn at our BMR (see my calculators at Fitness for Everyman.com to find your BMR). Another guideline might be to eat as we will eat at our goal weight. If we do that, we will eventually arrive at our goal weight and will never have to go on a diet! We simply begin eating (and exercising) now like the person we want to become in the future.

So don’t be sucked in by wild claims of fast and easy weight loss. It likely took years to gain the weight and it will not all fall off in 30 days. If you make a solid, common-sense plan for weight loss that is reasonably aggressive, you will multiply your chance of continued success. Are you, just like I was, misled by the eye-catching headlines about diets that says – Lose X pounds in little or no time? Of course you are, but why? Does it make any sense to believe that you could lose 10 pounds of fat in a week when you know that it can’t be done, at least not in a healthy way?

In this article I will show you that there actually are ways to lose weight fast but that it is not healthy for you. We could make a deal, well, it is you that have to make a deal with yourself. I will show you a method that guarantees a weight loss of at least 5 pounds per week in the healthiest way (not meaning that it is healthy but better than lots of other diets) and you will also learn why a superfast weight loss is dangerous to your health and the do’s and don’ts in fast weight loss.

First, as promised, the fast weight loss diet: This diet is composed to speed up your metabolism and it must be followed exactly. You may not use any spices except salt and peppers. It is important to remember to drink a lot of water, preferably water that is isotonic, meaning that it has added minerals that make it chemically look like you body fluids. Now you will learn why this diet is not healthy. First of all it makes you lose weight faster than the body can burn fat. Even if you drink a lot, the weight loss will consist of 20% fat, 40% water and 40% lean muscle. So let’s say that you lost 5 pounds, according to the percentage above you lost 1 pound of fat, 2 pounds of water weight and 2 pounds of lean muscle. Did you want to lose that much muscle? Probably not. All of the diets making you lose more than 1-2 pounds per week will burn your muscle mass for energy.

Now, why is that? The body saves the fat stored in your body for a rainy day (starvation period) and if you are on a diet and don’t exercise and use your muscle to the fullest extent your body figures that the muscle is not necessary to save and it will start using it for energy.

Last week I was training one of my favorite clients when her friend came into the gym to meet her and said to me, “I have to lose 10 pounds for a wedding next month! What can I do?”

“Well, that’s easy,” I said, “You just need to use this one machine and you can easily lose that stubborn fat in time for the wedding”. Needless to say she was thrilled, until I told her that the machine she needed was a time machine.

If she had a time machine, she could go back in time 8 weeks and that would easily give her enough time to accomplish her goal and more. Surprisingly, she didn’t seem to like that idea. So just before she was about to smack me upside the head, I said, “Wait! I have 5 simple rules that will help you lose 10 pounds, and here they are!”

The 5 Steps to Fast Fat Loss

I stunned her with those tips, and as I backed into the corner covering my head for protection, I thought I might be safe. But then she came back at me demanding to know what I meant by cutting all modified carbohydrates.

How was that going to help her lose 10 pounds?

So I explained, “A modified carbohydrate refers to anything not in its natural form. So you need to cut out pastas, whole-grain products, breakfast cereals, and all the regular bad processed carbohydrates. Stick to only fruits, vegetables, and raw nuts to get carbohydrates. But don’t fear fruit, it won’t make you fat. In fact, it will play a big part in helping you lose 10 pounds.”

I told her again and again that diet was the key to fat loss, and then I stared long and hard at the Frappacino she was holding in her hand. “That type of dietary discretion has to go,” I said, before asking her if she had ever been taught about the 90% compliance diet.

What is the 90% Compliance Diet?

I knew she was going to ask about the 90% compliance diet, so I figured I’d cover this as well while we were talking nutrition. “Over the week, you must stick to the whole, natural, unmodified foods approach at least 90% of the time. But you have 10% wiggle-room. That gives you 10% of your calories you can have from a reward meal and 2-3 little treats.”

She didn’t understand at first, but then I said, “So if you eat 1500 calories per day, that means you have 150 calories (10%) that can be treat calories. But if you want a reward meal of 600 calories, you’ll have to be perfect (100% compliance) for 4 days before you have your 600 calorie reward meal. And make sure your reward meal is only 600 calories, don’t go back for seconds and take it up to 1200 calories.”

The Best Workout To Lose 10 Pounds

With nutrition out of the way, I wanted to improve her workout program, so we switched her from useless high-repetition “toning” workouts to using challenging bodyweight exercises done in circuits.

This is a combo of strength training and interval training and helps you burn fat while sculpting your muscles. But it doesn’t bulk you up, so there will be no weight gain and you’ll be able to lose 10 pounds fast.

I then told her that interval training has been shown to work better than normal cardio for fat loss, especially burning belly fat. Interval training workouts also take less time, and therefore are a fast way to lose 10 pounds. But do intervals no more than 4 times per week.

Finally, I told her that she’ll have three days per week where she doesn’t need to do structured workouts, but she should stay active and reduce stress for at least 30 minutes. Yoga, pilates, walking outside in the fresh air, and playing light sports are great for staying active and reducing stress. And that’s a secret to help you lose 10 pounds. So stick to this plan, and you can drop 10 pounds in only 4 weeks.
